The Southern Environmental Law Center has a new position for an Energy Analyst and Outreach Manager, which can sit in our Atlanta, GA. or Birmingham, AL. offices. This individual will focus on energy policy analysis and strategic energy campaign work to advance our Energy Program and Climate Initiative goals throughout Georgia and Alabama. SELC has a hybrid work model that offers employees the flexibility to work remotely up to two days per week. This is a full-time, exempt, three-year term position and employees must reside in our region.
Primary Responsibilities:
SELC’s new Energy Analyst and Outreach Manager will work in two core strategic areas:
50% – Policy Analysis: Track developments in energy policy, technology and regulation; develop and coordinate strategy; research, gather and analyze data; provide generally useful/necessary information as needed. Specific responsibilities include:
- Track energy and climate-related state legislation, identify policy opportunities and barriers to progress, and educate legislators about climate and energy policy.
- Maintain databases and files of relevant data and policy information to support the work of attorneys, analysts, campaign staff, communications, marketing, and development staff.
- Provide research support and guidance on energy issues and keep team informed of key in-state developments and issues related to siting of clean energy projects.
- Explore opportunities to commission research or short white papers on climate- and energy-related topics to support campaign goals and elevate issue visibility and SELC thought leadership, working with program teams and the Communications team.
50% – Campaigns: Identify policy priorities and barriers to progress, in close coordination with colleagues; support the development, launch and implementation of strategic campaigns to advance Climate Initiative and Energy Program goals. Specific responsibilities include:
- Create state opportunity assessments and tactical recommendations to advance clean energy policies in Georgia and Alabama.
- Support strategic messaging and communications planning.
- Build and cultivate strong relationships with key decision-makers including public officials and staff, partners and other external stakeholders.
- Serve as a resource for SELC advocacy in coalition calls and meetings, stakeholder processes, and similar venues. This includes representing SELC in meetings with partner groups as appropriate.
- Support SELC’s collegial, collaborative, inclusive approach to advancing climate and energy policy solutions.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 4 years’ work experience with energy policy.
- Understanding of electricity regulation, energy policy and technical issues.
- Understanding of basic financial concepts, analyses and metrics; proficiency with Excel-based tools.
- Demonstrated experience with translating technical and policy information into a clear, concise, and understandable written product for non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple, concurrent projects/tasks with varying timelines.
- Ability to identify and prioritize strategic objectives.
- Experience recognizing opportunities for initiative and reacting swiftly to capitalize. You can take responsibility for seeking out and disseminatingtechnical information and related policy developments key to the work of SELC’s Energy Program and Climate Initiative.
- Refined and collaborative interpersonal skills. Your experience has bolstered an ability to build and maintain effective relationships with a diverse set of clients, partners, and coworkers.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- A genuine interest in and commitment to helping SELC create and foster a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace. You engage in ongoing learning and are eager to contribute to our organizational efforts in this area.
Desired Qualifications:
- Significant advocacy or issue campaign experience.
- Prior related energy or campaign experience working in one of SELC’s six states, preferably Alabama or Georgia.
- Strong persuasive writing and verbal presentation skills.

Compensation & Benefits:
This is a full-time, exempt, three-year term position. SELC offers salaries competitive with other leading environmental nonprofits nationally and provides an excellent benefits package. SELC is a PSLF (Public Service Loan Forgiveness) eligible employer.
SELC will also provide relocation reimbursement for those relocating for an SELC position, up to a specific dollar amount and contingent on the move being at least 50 miles from the current primary address.
